Dwell – April 2024

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Psalm 23:6

Psalm 23 is probably one of the most well-known Psalms and it brings great comfort. In the first half of the chapter David is talking about the Lord and His attributes but in the last three verses he talks to the Lord. David celebrates the protection and guidance that God provides for him. Our good shepherd is with us constantly; leading, protecting and blessing us with many gifts. A skilled shepherd does just that, he leads his sheep to food and water and protects the sheep from the enemy. In this chapter David praises God for giving him peace and confidence in the Gospel. The knowledge of God’s protection and provision are a great comfort to David and also to us.

This has to be one of my favorite “dwell” passages because it shows me how much I am loved, how God pursues me and how the assurance of eternity in heaven is mine. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life. We are being pursued; God is not idly sitting around waiting on us. He is not expecting perfection from us before he acts, He is not wondering when we will be worthy of His goodness and mercy. No, he is pursuing us, chasing after us, following us. He knows that there is nothing we can do to merit the goodness and mercy that He lavishes upon us. Yet, He pursues us even more. Knowing that God is pursuing me and wants me to be with him forever in His house is so encouraging and helps me rest at ease. I know that I am not worthy of this pursuing, since I am sinful and often turn my back on Him but the fact that He is walking with me, running after me, following me with His goodness and mercy is a great comfort.

The fact that I get to dwell in the house of the Lord forever is such an incredible blessing. It is what keeps me going some days. I know that the things of this earth are temporary. I know that the trials that I endure will fade away and never be thought of again when I reach my final dwelling place. When I do finally dwell in the house of the Lord my faith will be turned to sight. The things that I trust and the faith that I have here on earth will become visible and tangible. What an unexplainable blessing those things will be.

Whatever happens in our lives, with our health, our finances, our family, or even outside our control, the government, weather and the like, if the Lord is our Shepherd then surely goodness and mercy shall follow us all the days of our lives and we will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
