Dwell – March 2024

One thing have I asked of the Lord,
    that will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord
and to inquire in his temple.

Psalm 27:4

If you could pick one thing to ask God and know you would get it, what would it be? David picked the thing that I hope most of us would consider asking God for, to DWELL in the house of the LORD all the days of our lives. He asks. He seeks. He knows that dwelling in the house of the Lord is the BEST option. There is no other need. No other desire worth having once you have been given the gift of dwelling in the house of the Lord forever. We are given this gift through our baptism and through the death and resurrection of Jesus. We have been buried with Christ in our baptism and we are now children of God and will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. We will be granted this incredible gift on our last day.

Gaze upon the beauty of the Lord

I love that he wanted so badly to dwell in the house of the Lord, not to have feasts, not to walk on the streets of gold, not to enjoy the singing and dancing but to “gaze upon the beauty of the Lord”. That says something about the beauty of the Lord. Have you ever been so struck by the beauty around you that you just stop and stare, gaze, dwell. The mountains, the ocean, a sunset or sunrise. The beauty we get to behold on earth won’t even compare to the beauty of the Lord. We will get to gaze on the beauty of the Lord forever. The beauty of his nature and his presence. There is nothing greater to do with our time than to fill our minds and hearts with the beauty and goodness of God.

Dwelling with God this side of heaven

How do we do this practically, this side of heaven. We immerse ourselves in His Word. We dwell in Scripture. We attend the Divine Service. We listen to the Word of God and study. We gaze upon the beauty that surrounds us. God is good and faithful, and He will bring us to dwell in His house forever because of the gifts that have been given to us by grace alone through faith alone as revealed in scripture alone.
